Domestic Travel Study Program

Academic Programs' Travel Study program provides opportunities for students to study a variety of topics - from studying languages in native countries, to seeing first-hand the people and places talked about in courses.

Travel allows students to gain new perspectives about the world, to immerse themselves in a particular subject of interest and to experience subjects in a way that cannot be attained in a traditional classroom environment.

Travel Study Programs Offered

December Travel Writing Course in Puerto Rico

Communicating Culture: Travel Writing in Puerto Rico
6-credit hours
Puerto Rico, December 29, 2009—January 11, 2010

Explore the cultural traditions of modern travel media through a study of the British travel writing tradition. Students who sign up for Communicating Culture: Travel Writing in Puerto Rico during the December Intersession 2009 will study the major contexts and motives of travel writing, including exploration, scientific and cultural curiosity, tourism, commerce and political imperatives.

The goal of this class is to expose students to some of the origins, contexts and foundations of contemporary forms of travel journalism.  This six-credit hour experience will introduce you to the joys and challenges of writing about distant places and different cultures in two different courses: Travel Writing Concepts: Culture & Theory  and Travel Writing Genres, taught by Profs. Meta G. Carstarphen and Kathryn Jenson White. Professional Writing graduate student Jocelyn Pederson is the course’s teaching assistant. Students will attend lectures for both classes and do some research and writing in Norman before we leave. Most of the class time will be on location in beautiful Puerto Rico. From San Juan to Fajardo to Ponce and more, we will explore the island to understand its culture and how travel writers in a variety of genres communicate the complexity of other places, other people to their readers.

Based in the capital city of San Juan, our class will venture out to beaches, the U.S. Forest Service’s only rain forest, museums and other cultural sites for immersion into new cultural experiences. Open to all majors, no previous experience in travel writing is necessary — just a strong ability in writing, a curiosity about the world outside Norman, and an adventurous spirit.

Communicating Culture is open to all majors. Spanish language ability is helpful, but not required. Join Profs. Meta G. Carstarphen and Kathryn Jenson White as they take this traveling classroom to explore what lies between the Atlantic and Caribbean oceans.

Information sessions will take place Wednesday, September 2, 2009  and Thursday, September 17, 2009 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in GYLD I Hall of Fame [1st floor]. Handouts, refreshments and slides be available from 4 to 4:30; detailed discussions about the class and the expectations of both courses will begin at 4:30pm. Students are invited to drop during any part of these sessions as their time permits. For more information, e-mail Jocelyn Pederson at canadianokie@mac.com.
